Search Engine Optimization for Mobile Phone Visitors

It is no news that more people search the internet for information from the comfort of their mobile phones. If you have a blog and you want your blog to be found by these people, you need to perform what is called Mobile Search Engine Optimization. Doing this will make your blog to be found as soon as people find a certain keyword on the popular search engines.

In this post, I would show you how you can easily optimize your blog so that it can be found easily as soon as visitors perform a search from their mobile phones.

On-site mobile SEO Best Practices

To optimize your blog for mobile search engine visitors, please do the following;

1. Use 100% valid XHTML 1.0 code. (Note: it is likely that WML will be phased out in the near future.) Many optimizers on the traditional WWW do not consider using valid code as a best practice. Mobile search engines however may have more trouble digesting invalid code. Be safe! If you validate, mobile search engines won’t have any trouble with your site.

2. Follow accessibility best practices. These will ensure that your content is accessible to anyone regardless of their platform — this includes mobile users and mobile search engines. The W3C’s Web Accessibility Initiative is a good place to turn for the latest information on accessibility. Dive Into Accessibility is also a useful tutorial.

3. Follow traditional on-site SEO best practices. You know the drill: major keywords in the title tag, H1′s and body text, keyword-rich anchor text for internal links, etc.

Please note: As soon as I find more information about on-site SEO practices, I will update this post so that you can get to do more things with more information.

Getting Spidered and Indexed by Mobile Search Engines

If you want mobile search engines to spider and index your site, they must know about it first. Submit your site to major mobile search engines for quick spidering.

Google Sitemaps (BETA)

Yahoo! Submit Your Mobile Site

Apart from the major search engines (Google and Yahoo) above, you can also submit your blog to the following mobile search engines for easy accessibility. The following search engines are the major players in mobile search at this time.

Google XHTML Mobile Search from Google Mobile, Yahoo! Mobile, MSN Mobile Search, AOL Mobile Search, Nokia Mobile Search, Technorati Mobile, 4INFO Mobile Search

Now, go ahead and submit your blog to all the mobile search engines above and expect loads of traffic from mobile phone visitors.
